omaha : Since the 1600s, the Pawnee, Otoe, Sioux, the Missouri and Ioway all variously occupied the land that became Omaha. The word "Omaha" (actually U-Mo'n-Ho'n) means "Dwellers on the Bluff". The Lewis and Clark Expedition passed by the riverbanks that would later become the city of Omaha in 1804, and met on Council Bluff at a point about 20 miles (30 km) north of present-day Omaha, at which point they met with the Otoe. It was not incorporated as a municipality until April 4, 1850—five months before California achieved statehood. The name Los Angeles is shortened from "La Ciudad de Nuestra Senora la Reina de Los Angeles de Porciuncula" (The City of Our Lady, the Queen of the Angels of Porciuncula). palm springs : Approximately 110 miles east of Los Angeles. It lies at the base of 10,834-foot-tall Mount San Jacinto, the eastern flank of which abuts the downtown area. The Agua Caliente band of Cahuilla Indians is composed of several small groups of Indians who were living in the modern day Palm Springs area when the Agua Caliente Reservation was established by the United States Government in 1896. Archaeological research has shown that the Cahuilla have lived in the area for the past 350-500 years. The Cahuilla name for the area was "Se-Khi" (boiling water). In the early 1800s, Spanish explorers named the area "Agua Caliente" (hot water). At least one Spanish explorer referred to the area as "La Palma de la Mano de Dios" or "The Palm of God's Hand". Guadalajara has recently released informatioon about the Guggenheim Museum which is currently under construction. It, along with Herculaneum, was destroyed, and completely buried, during a catastrophic eruption of the volcano Mount Vesuvius spanning 2 days on 24 August 79 AD. palermo : Palermo was founded in the 8th century BC by Phoenician tradesmen around a natural harbour on the north-western coast of Sicily. Palermo is widely considered to be the most conquered city in the world. Palermo remained a Phoenician city until the First Punic War (264-241 BC), when Sicily fell under Roman rule. When the Roman Empire was split, Sicily and Palermo came under the rule of the Eastern Byzantine Empire. In the 9th century, Sicily was divided into two prefectures by the Byzantines. The two prefects went to war with each other, and Euphimius, the winner, dreamt of reuniting the Roman empire. However, he lacked an army, so he asked the Arab Aghlabids rulers of North Africa, at the time the up-and-coming power in the Mediterranean, to lend him theirs. Within a week of the Arabs' arrival in Palermo in 827, Euphimius died mysteriously, and they declined to leave. Under Muslim dominion Palermo became an important commercial and cultural center, a flourishing city broadly known in the whole Arab world - it is said that it had more than 300 mosques. In 1060 the Normans launched a crusade against the Muslim emirate of Sicily, taking Palermo on January 10, 1072 and the whole island by 1091. Sicily in 1194 fell under the control of the Holy Roman Empire and ever since has been dealt around rulers of Europe like a hand of cards. Streets are filled with vendors selling their crafts and artwork. You can stroll the alleys under the hot sun all day sipping on ice-cold drinks and bartering with the sellers. The feel of antiquity is still preserved here despite being so close to the hustle of a major Mexican metropolis.
